Grow confident, culturally grounded reo Māori capability—at work, during work hours.
Whaihua is the highest course within the Ngā Kākano foundational pathway. Learners connect ideas, strengthen grammatical reliability, expand spoken interaction and apply reo Māori to real workplace tasks. The course develops longer explanations, summaries, instructions, meeting contributions and written messages while deepening understanding of tikanga roles, cultural boundaries, language revitalisation and knowledge authority.

Learners with a sound foundation who can recognise and construct common sentence patterns but want stronger fluency and workplace application.

Whāinga Paetae | Course Objectives
Across the programme, participants will:
Use advanced reo M?ori with greater precision, fluency and confidence across formal and informal contexts.
Construct and interpret complex sentences, extended arguments, narratives and explanations.
Deliver formal mihi, presentations and kaupapa-based k?rero with appropriate tone and cultural awareness.
Use nuanced vocabulary, idiom, whakatauk? and figurative language to communicate meaning effectively.
Engage critically with tikanga, m?tauranga M?ori, whakapapa and iwi narratives.
Adapt language and behaviour appropriately across different audiences, kaupapa and cultural settings.
Facilitate or support reo M?ori use within teams, wh?nau, organisations or community groups.
Mentor less-confident learners and model constructive, mana-enhancing language practice.
Design strategies or resources that strengthen the visibility, consistency and vitality of te reo M?ori.
Create a long-term pathway for advanced study, leadership, contribution and ongoing language revitalisation.

Course Dates
Courses commence during the week of Monday 24 August 2026. The indicative final teaching week is the week of 19 October 2026.
Class Option 1:
Tuesday: 3.30pm - 5.00pm
CLass Option 2
Wednesday: 5.30pm - 7.00pm
Participants enrol in one stream. Where space permits, learners may attend the alternative stream when they cannot attend their usual class.
