"Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini."

“My strength is not that of one, but that of many.”

Ditch the boring “Ko wai au?” unit and invite ākonga to explore identity through the exciting world of superheroes. Students learn to describe appearance, personality, feelings, and interests while practising how to introduce themselves and others in te reo Māori.

Through creative activities, learners design and present their own Māori-inspired superhero, using descriptive reo Māori to bring their character to life. This imaginative unit blends storytelling, creativity, and language learning while encouraging students to celebrate the unique strengths and qualities of others.

Assessments

This unit includes a feature-style recorded presentation assessment designed to be engaging, achievable, and confidence-building. Learning is scaffolded to ensure ākonga absorb language meaningfully before producing it through expressive tasks.

Aligned with NZC Levels 1–2 and the Pou Reo framework — Kia Tika, Kia Rere, Kia Māori, and Kia Ora te Reo — assessment prioritises clarity, fluency, cultural integrity, and learner wellbeing. The focus is on authentic communication rather than technical perfection, encouraging courageous and enthusiastic reo use.

Ākonga will design and present their own Māori superhero character using te reo Māori to describe appearance, personality, strengths, values, and superpowers.

Learners will introduce their character using Ko and Nō sentence structures while describing physical features, emotions, preferences, and abilities through expressive and descriptive reo Māori.

They will present their superhero visually through posters, slideshows, comic strips, videos, or creative artwork while incorporating Māori labels, phrases, and storytelling elements throughout their presentation.

The unit culminates in a Huinga o ngā Iho Pūmanawa showcase where learners present their creations, celebrate individuality, and explore how courage, kindness, teamwork, and aroha can be expressed through both language and action.
